Colon Hydrotherapy in Milwaukee

Colon hydrotherapy, also called a colonic or colonic irrigation, uses warm, filtered water to help empty stool from the large intestine through a closed system. At VIVA Wellness in Brookfield, we provide colon hydrotherapy near Milwaukee in a private treatment suite with guidance from an I-ACT Certified Colon Hydrotherapist.

Whether you know what to expect or if this is your first colonic appointment, we take time to explain the process and answer questions before you begin. Our Brookfield clinic is convenient for clients from Milwaukee, Waukesha, and surrounding Southeast Wisconsin communities.

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

droplet

Colon hydrotherapy is a form of colon cleansing that gently introduces warm, filtered water into the large intestine through a small rectal nozzle. Water and stool then leave the body through enclosed tubing connected to the colon hydrotherapy system.

Unlike an at-home enema, a colonic involves a series of controlled fills and releases over a longer period of time. At VIVA Wellness, the treatment itself generally lasts about 30 to 40 minutes, with additional appointment time for preparation, questions, and use of your private bathroom afterward.

Some clients choose colon hydrotherapy as part of a personal wellness or bowel-cleansing routine. Colon hydrotherapy is not a treatment for disease, and current research does not support broader claims that colon cleansing removes systemic toxins or treats medical conditions.

Because colon hydrotherapy is not appropriate for everyone, health history and possible contraindications should always be considered before treatment.

A Private, Guided Colonic Experience

It is completely normal to have questions before your first colonic. Many clients want to know what the treatment will feel like, how private the experience is, what happens during the session, and whether someone will be available throughout the appointment.

We designed the VIVA Wellness experience with those concerns in mind.

Your colon hydrotherapy appointment includes:

  • An I-ACT Certified Colon Hydrotherapist
  • A private treatment suite with an attached bathroom
  • A closed colon hydrotherapy system
  • Single-use supplies for components that come in contact with the body
  • Filtered, temperature-controlled water
  • A colon hydrotherapist who explains the process, operates the equipment, and is available to support you during your session
  • Gentle abdominal massage during portions of the session
  • Time to ask questions before, during, and after treatment
  • Access to a VIVA Wellness nurse practitioner when additional health screening is appropriate

You remain covered during your session, and waste stays contained within the closed system. Your colon hydrotherapist will explain each step and communicate with you throughout your appointment.

What Happens During a Colonic?

Your first appointment begins with time to review the process and ask any questions you have. You will then get comfortable in our private colon hydrotherapy suite and undress from the waist down while remaining covered.

A lubricated, single-use rectal nozzle is gently inserted a short distance into the rectum and connected to the closed colon hydrotherapy system. Warm, filtered water is gradually introduced into the colon. Your hydrotherapist alternates between controlled fills and releases while checking in with you about your comfort. Gentle abdominal massage may also be used during portions of the session.

Water and stool leave through enclosed tubing, so you do not need to worry about seeing, smelling, or coming into contact with waste. After approximately 30 to 40 minutes of treatment, the tubing is removed, and you can use the private bathroom attached to the suite before getting dressed.

Your initial appointment is scheduled for approximately 75 minutes, while return appointments are approximately 60 minutes. The colon hydrotherapy portion itself typically lasts about 30 to 40 minutes.

Why Choose VIVA Wellness for Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy is a personal service, and your comfort matters. At VIVA Wellness, your session is guided by a trained, I-ACT Certified Colon Hydrotherapist who operates the equipment, answers questions, and adjusts the experience based on your comfort.

VIVA Wellness uses both the Aquanet APS-100 and Aquanet EC-2000 colon hydrotherapy systems. Having both systems allows us to offer different treatment approaches, including pressure-controlled and lower-pressure gravity-fed options, while using professional closed-system equipment with built-in temperature, flow, filtration, and sanitation features.

Our Aquanet equipment uses three-stage water treatment, including sediment filtration, activated carbon filtration, and ultraviolet treatment before water enters the system. The equipment also includes sanitation features for the internal water lines and waste pathway.

We use single-use, disposable supplies for components that come in contact with the body and follow strict universal precautions and sanitation procedures between clients.

This combination of professional equipment, multiple treatment options, specialized training, and a private treatment setting allows us to provide a more individualized colon hydrotherapy experience based on each client's comfort and needs.

For many first-time clients, knowing exactly what to expect makes the biggest difference. If you are nervous or have questions before booking, call or text us. We are happy to walk you through the process!

Is Colon Hydrotherapy Safe?

Colon hydrotherapy is not risk-free, and it is not appropriate for everyone. Possible side effects can include temporary cramping, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, dehydration, or changes in electrolyte balance. More serious complications, including infection or bowel perforation, are uncommon but possible.

Certain health conditions may increase those risks. If you have a gastrointestinal condition, kidney or heart disease, have recently had abdominal or colorectal surgery, are pregnant, take certain medications, or have concerns about whether colon hydrotherapy is appropriate for you, talk with your healthcare provider before scheduling.

VIVA Wellness clients who need additional screening may also be asked to speak with one of our nurse practitioners before treatment.

Who Should Not Receive Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy may not be appropriate for people with certain medical conditions or recent procedures.

Contraindications may include:

  • Active Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Acute diverticulitis
  • Current or recent significant gastrointestinal or rectal bleeding
  • Intestinal perforation
  • Recent colon, rectal, or abdominal surgery
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Severe hemorrhoids, fissures, or fistulas
  • Certain abdominal or gastrointestinal cancers
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Kidney insufficiency
  • Cirrhosis
  • Abdominal aneurysm
  • Certain stages of pregnancy
  • Other conditions that make colon irrigation medically inappropriate

This is not a complete medical screening list. Please contact VIVA Wellness before booking if you are unsure whether a medical condition, surgery, pregnancy, or medication could affect your eligibility.

Clients with a current C. difficile infection cannot receive colon hydrotherapy at VIVA Wellness. A previous history of C. difficile requires consultation with one of our nurse practitioners before scheduling.

Colon Hydrotherapy FAQs

Is a colonic the same as an enema?

No. An enema typically introduces a smaller amount of liquid into the lower portion of the colon and is generally released shortly afterward.

Colon hydrotherapy uses specialized equipment and repeated introduction and release of water over a longer treatment session. VIVA Wellness also offers select enemas as optional add-ons to certain colon hydrotherapy appointments.

Does colon hydrotherapy hurt?

You may notice feelings of fullness, pressure, movement, or temporary cramping during a colonic. Your hydrotherapist communicates with you throughout the session, so you should always speak up if something feels uncomfortable.

Many first-time clients arrive feeling nervous simply because they do not know what to expect. We take time to explain the treatment before getting started and keep the experience as private and comfortable as possible.

How many colonics should I get?

There is no universal number of colon hydrotherapy sessions that is right for everyone. Some clients start with a single session, while others choose a short series to work toward their personal wellness goals.

At VIVA Wellness, we often recommend beginning with a series of sessions rather than treating colon hydrotherapy as a one-time experience. After that initial series, some clients choose less frequent maintenance appointments based on their goals, preferences, and how they respond to treatment.

Your hydrotherapist can talk through scheduling options with you and help you decide what makes sense for your individual experience.

Colon hydrotherapy should not replace medical evaluation for persistent constipation, abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Does a colonic affect gut bacteria?

Colon hydrotherapy may or may not temporarily affect the environment within the colon, but everyone’s gut microbiome is different and individual responses can vary.

How often should you have a bowel movement?

Normal bowel habits can vary considerably from one person to another. What matters most is what is normal for you and whether you are experiencing persistent constipation, diarrhea, pain, blood in your stool, or a significant change in your usual bowel habits.

Those concerns should be discussed with a healthcare provider rather than treated solely with colon hydrotherapy. If you are dealing with ongoing digestive concerns, VIVA Wellness also offers functional medicine consultations focused on digestive and gut health.

How should I prepare for my colonic?

Follow the preparation instructions provided by VIVA Wellness before your appointment. In general, avoid arriving immediately after a large meal and stay appropriately hydrated before your visit.

If you take medications, have a medical condition, or have questions about what you should eat or drink before treatment, contact us before your appointment.

Is there downtime after colon hydrotherapy?

Most clients have little to no downtime after colon hydrotherapy and return to their normal activities after their appointment. You may notice some temporary digestive activity afterward, so staying hydrated and giving yourself a little time to settle can be helpful.

Can minors receive colon hydrotherapy at VIVA Wellness?

VIVA Wellness only considers colon hydrotherapy for clients age 15 or older.

A legal guardian must be present throughout the appointment for a minor, and both the parent or guardian and minor must first complete a consultation with a VIVA Wellness nurse practitioner.

Colonics FAQs

droplet

When beginning to detox the colon we recommend anywhere from 4-10 colonics sessions, depending on your level of toxicity. The colon is 4-6 feet long and because the waste inside the colon can get very compacted it often takes multiple sessions to break it down. Scheduling your sessions as close together as possible will give you the best results.

During your first session you may feel some discomfort from the breakdown of the gas wall that has built up in your intestines over time. After introducing more hydration to your colon your sessions will get much easier.

At VIVA Wellness, we utilize single-use, sterile rectal nozzles and a multi-stage sanitation protocol. We use sterilized disposables, detailed sanitation protocols, and EPA-registered disinfectants to remove any danger of contamination. Learn more about our equipment, provider training, and colon hydrotherapy safety protocols.

It is impossible to become dependent on colonics. We use nothing but filtered water during our colonic hydrotherapy sessions. In fact, colonics help strengthen the muscles in the colon wall. This will help the peristalsis movement and you will be able to have more bowel movements on your own after the old matter is released.

Getting colonics will actually help re-balance your gut flora. The human body needs a balance of 70% good bacteria and 30% bad bacteria. Good bacteria cannot grow in a toxic environment, so by flushing out the bad, changing the diet and taking probiotics you can create that good and healthy environment for your gut.

A healthy colon has three bowel movements a day.

Your first session will take a little bit longer, followed by shorter sessions. For your initial colonic you should plan for approximately 75 minutes. Follow up sessions will be approximately 60 minutes each.

We recommend that clients that have more questions or wish to jump start their wellness journey schedule a session with our Nurse Practitioner to discuss your goals.

We recommend avoiding caffeine and dairy products for 24 hours before your session. If you have a juicer at home or have access to freshly pressed juice we recommend having multiple juices in the days leading up to your appointment. Please come to your session on an empty stomach (no food 2-3 hours before your session and no liquids 30 minutes prior to your session).

There is usually no down time after a colonic. Most people tend to feel amazing after their sessions. If you are on the more toxic side you could have some general detox symptoms which include: headache, fatigue or nausea.

We recommend that you consult your physician or licensed healthcare practitioner if you have any concerns about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy.

Our nurse practitioner, Jennifer Hruz FNP-BC, APNP, is available to answer any questions you may have. If you have any questions or concerns, we recommend you set up 30 minute complimentary consultation in office or as a virtual visit to discuss your concerns.
