Post Surgery Lymphatic Drainage Treatment

A way to encourage the strategic movement of lymph fluid through the body after surgery, Post-Surgical Manual Lymphatic Drainage Treatments can reduce swelling, pain, and reduce the risk of fibrosis. It may help to improve circulation in the lymphatic system and flush toxins from your body's tissues, which helps create an optimal healing environment.

Post-Surgical Lymphatic Drainage Treatment Can Help the Healing Process

VIVA Wellness water drop

When undergoing many types of surgical procedures, your body is experiencing and processing a lot as it begins to heal. Supporting the lymphatic system—the primary healing tool your body has—through lymphatic drainage treatments at VIVA Wellness facilitates healing and may reduce the risk of post-surgical complications during the healing process.

As a wellness clinic offering nontraditional healing and physical support services, it’s obvious that your goals and results are incredibly important to us! That’s why we have developed a specific treatment protocol based on recommendations from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies, a premier teaching institution that uses evidence-based guidelines in the management and care of the lymphatic system.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Treatment After Surgery

Many surgeons recommend their patients receive Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Treatment after surgery as part of their post-care recommendations. Unfortunately, there aren't many provider offices that specialize in post-surgical MLD. Our RN is not only certified in MLD and has advanced training specifically in the management of post-surgical clients, but she was previously a surgical RN with years of experience in the operating room.

Common surgeries that should have post-surgical MLD:

  • Breast augmentation, including explant, or implant removals
  • Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
  • Post-breast cancer (mastectomy) lymphedema prevention
  • Tummy tuck
  • Liposuction or Lipo 360
  • Facelift
  • Mommy makeover
  • Rhinoplasty

There are many other procedures (both cosmetic and non-cosmetic in nature) that manual lymphatic drainage is an excellent complement to—simply be in touch to determine whether that’s the case in your scenario.

Plan for Post-Surgical Lymphatic Drainage Treatment

We strongly recommend you plan your post-surgical treatment protocol PRIOR to your surgery. We also highly suggest that you experience 1-3 Lymphatic Drainage Treatments (either manual or vacuum radiofrequency (RF)) to get your body into the healing state in preparation for the procedure.

How Many Lymphatic Drainage Treatments Will I Need Post-Surgery?

VIVA Wellness strongly encourages post-surgical clients receive a minimum of 8 sessions within a 30 day period to prevent surgical-related complications, such as fibrosis. If sessions are not started by day 14 after surgery, the risk of fibrosis is increased.

Fibrosis is the formation of scar tissue and adhesions under the skin. Unfortunately, it can be very common after surgery. Fibrosis can cause hardening of the area, a lumpy appearance, and can lead to swelling of the surgical site. Manual lymphatic drainage after surgery dramatically reduces the risk of the formation of fibrosis.

Especially in procedures like liposuction, fibrosis is one of the most common healing complications after surgery. Having a lymphatic drainage treatment protocol post-surgery will enhance your results and lead to better healing!

Here are a few ways that the treatment benefits the postoperative body:

  • Eliminates swelling in the immediate area
  • Decreases scar tissue significantly
  • Reduces pain!

Not including lymphatic drainage treatment may facilitate:

  • Immune system suppression
  • Pain: increased and/or continual
  • Swelling: increased and/or continual
  • Hardness in the trauma area / surgical location
  • Hematoma
  • Water retention

It's important to note that we do not treat Lymphedema, which is a swelling affecting your lymphatic system, often in arms and legs. There is no known cure for lymphedema.

THE TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Your first Post-Surgical Manual Lymphatic Drainage session with VIVA Wellness will be a two-hour visit with our Registered Nurse where she will review your surgery, perform an assessment, check your incisions and surgical drains, and come up with an individualized treatment plan. You'll get started with MLD right away at this visit, too!

To make scheduling easy, we offer post-surgical lymphatic drainage packages. Each follow up session will be a 45 minute appointment and include one treatment area.

Packages are offered in:

  • 8 sessions (the minimum recommended!!)
  • 12 sessions
  • 16 sessions

When To Schedule

While we would suggest every other day, such as Monday / Wednesday / Friday or Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday, you can receive this on consecutive days—to be honest, in a perfect world, you would be getting this done as many days as you are able during the 30 day period. This will of course vary by procedure and individual.

If you would like help coming up with your treatment protocol plan for MLD prior to surgery, our RN can meet with you for a consultation! All 30 minute consults are $50 and held either in-clinic or via a remote televisit—just let us know your preference.

Please Note: Some surgeries require two treatment areas of post-surgical MLD. For example, for liposuction with BBL, or if you had two surgical procedures performed at the same time. If two treatment areas are being worked on with post-surgical MLD, then your sessions will be 90 min each and we would still recommend following our treatment frequency.

IMPORTANT: We STRONGLY encourage you to follow our treatment protocol, but should you wish to only have a single session post-surgery, we can accommodate that request with the disclaimer that the risk of fibrosis or other healing complications may develop. We strongly encourage new clients to have an Introductory Post-Surgical MLD (a 2 hour thorough appointment) where we are able to discuss and assess your history, your goals, your unique scenario and your risk factors in order to come up with a plan that will support your healing. If you have a strong aversion to this format or don’t want to purchase a package, you may schedule a single MLD appointment (30 min).
