What Functional Medicine Treatment Looks Like Beyond Lab Results

You have spent weeks dealing with bloating, unpredictable digestion, heartburn, or a skin concern that keeps returning. You may have already changed what you eat or tried products on your own. Then you complete specialty testing and finally have pages of results in front of you. What are you supposed to do with that information?

That is where functional medicine treatment becomes different from testing alone. At VIVA Wellness in the Milwaukee area, lab results are used as part of a provider-led evaluation for adults dealing with chronic digestive and dermatological concerns. The goal is to connect what testing shows with your symptoms and health history so the next steps are based on more than guesswork.

What Does Functional Medicine Treatment Include?

Functional medicine treatment uses testing, symptoms, health history, and provider evaluation together to guide an individual care plan. At VIVA Wellness, clients working with our Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner complete specific testing before their appointment so the conversation can move beyond symptoms and look more closely at factors that may be contributing to ongoing digestive or skin concerns.

Why Aren’t Functional Medicine Lab Results Enough on Their Own?

A lab report can identify findings worth discussing, but it cannot decide which findings matter most for you.

At VIVA, clients seeing Annette Harris, DNP, FNP-BC, for functional medicine complete two tests before their appointment. The GI-MAP is an at-home stool test used to assess gastrointestinal pathogens and microbial imbalances that may be relevant to digestive and skin concerns. The Organic Acids Test, or OAT, is an at-home urine test that provides information about areas such as yeast and mold markers, bacterial overgrowth, toxin burden, and metabolic function.

Both tests are required before seeing Annette. That gives her information to review alongside what you have actually been experiencing rather than starting the appointment without objective data.

The process is also more selective than ordering every available test. DUTCH hormone urine testing is used mainly with some acne clients and is not required for everyone. Blood work is ordered selectively rather than routinely. Mycotoxin testing may be considered when initial testing shows high fungal markers, or symptoms raise questions about possible mold exposure.

That distinction matters. More lab work does not automatically create a clearer plan. VIVA’s gut health care uses specific testing to help narrow the questions that need to be addressed.

What Happens After Your Test Results Come Back?

The next step is interpretation, not simply receiving a list of abnormal markers. Annette is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from UW-Milwaukee. She completed a Doctoral Residency in Integrative Medicine and has additional training in functional dermatology. Her work at VIVA focuses on chronic digestive and dermatological concerns.

That background matters because test findings need context. A client with persistent constipation, for example, may have a different symptom history from someone experiencing diarrhea, heartburn, or recurring bloating. Someone seeking help for acne may bring a different set of questions than someone dealing with eczema or psoriasis.

During functional medicine care, those differences help shape how test findings are viewed. Annette’s philosophy also places a strong emphasis on food and gut health rather than assuming that an expensive treatment or a long list of supplements should always be the first answer.

You can meet Annette and learn more about her clinical background and why her own experience with gut health led her toward this area of care.

Functional Medicine Testing vs. Treatment: What Is the Difference?

Testing answers a narrower question: What information can we gather about what may be happening? Functional medicine treatment asks the next question: What should we do with that information based on this person’s symptoms and health history?

That difference is important because specialty lab reports can contain a large amount of information. Seeing a particular marker does not mean every person with that finding needs the same diet, supplement, medication, or other intervention.

It is also why trying to interpret functional medicine testing by yourself can be limiting. A result that looks important on paper still needs to be considered with the rest of your health picture.

At VIVA, the testing is meant to support a provider-guided plan. The GI-MAP and OAT establish a starting point before the appointment, while other tests are added only when there is a reason to consider them.

This makes the process more specific than ordering a broad collection of wellness labs and then deciding what to try based on individual numbers.

When This Matters for Chronic Digestive or Skin Concerns

Functional medicine may be worth considering when a digestive or skin problem has become an ongoing pattern, and you want a closer look at possible contributing factors. For example, you may regularly deal with gas and bloating even after changing parts of your diet. Constipation or diarrhea may keep returning. Heartburn may continue to interrupt meals or sleep. You may have a chronic digestive condition and want additional information about your gut health.

VIVA also works with adults experiencing chronic dermatological concerns. The clinic lists acne among the skin concerns addressed through its functional medicine service, and Annette’s work focuses on digestive and dermatological health.

This service is not designed for every medical situation. VIVA does not use functional medicine appointments for urgent or acute concerns such as new-onset rectal bleeding or a poison ivy rash. Those situations need the appropriate form of medical care rather than waiting for specialty functional medicine testing.

VIVA also currently limits functional medicine appointments to adults age 18 and older and does not see out-of-state clients for this service. Annette generally does not treat people who are simultaneously seeing multiple alternative or holistic providers for the same concern. Those boundaries help clarify who this service is actually designed for rather than presenting functional medicine as an answer for every symptom.

What Should You Look for Beyond the Lab Report?

One useful question is whether testing changes the quality of the conversation you can have with your provider. A functional medicine evaluation should give you a clearer reason for why a test was used and how its findings relate to the concern that brought you in. It should also distinguish between information that deserves attention and results that may not change the plan.

Provider qualifications are worth looking at too. Digestive symptoms, chronic skin concerns, medical history, and specialty testing can overlap in complicated ways. At VIVA, functional medicine care is led by a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner rather than asking clients to interpret specialty laboratory reports on their own.

Cost may also be part of deciding whether to move forward with wellness care. VIVA Wellness is listed in the CareCredit provider directory in Brookfield. Clients interested in financing can review current CareCredit options and eligibility directly with CareCredit.

The larger point is that a test should lead somewhere useful. If you finish the process with numbers but no clearer understanding of why they matter, you are missing an important part of what provider-guided functional medicine care is meant to offer.

Find Out if Functional Medicine Treatment in Milwaukee Fits Your Needs

Functional medicine treatment goes beyond collecting lab results. The useful part comes from connecting those findings with your symptoms, medical history, and the health concerns that have continued despite what you have already tried.

At VIVA Wellness in Brookfield, we provide functional medicine care for Wisconsin adults dealing with chronic digestive and dermatological concerns. Required GI-MAP and OAT testing gives Annette specific information to review before your appointment, while additional testing is considered selectively rather than automatically.
